Animal Samaritans has been in our desert for many years now. They are the premiere spay and neuter clinic in our area and provide not only low cost programs, but, when funds allow, no cost for those qualified. They are also known for their community outreach. From cat and kitten adoptions ( and recently, some dogs...),to educating children in our schools on how to be kind and care for their pets, to taking special Therapy Dogs to challenged children, young adults and Seniors at various care facilities, this organization is committed to bettering the lives of animals and the people who love them.

Animal Samaritans is always looking for volunteers and there are many ways you can contribute to this good work. One particularly delightful way to help is to spend an hour or more a week sitting in one of the cat rooms playing with the cats. This is fun and can be very important in the lives of these fur balls. Their socializing is the key to how adoptable they become and friendly human contact can make the ultimate difference in their lives. They also need people to help them at their community adoption days. You sit with the pets up for adoption at various locations thru out the desert, mostly shopping centers, and always safe and well populated. It's a fun way to meet new friends and can really make a positive difference with the animals. Give Animal Samaritans a call today. Tell them I sent you... :)

"The Orphan Pet Oasis out at the end of Indian Avenue just across the I-10 on the left hand side (if you're coming from Palm Springs ..) is under new management and one of the desert's "no-Kill" shelters. It has room for 160 dogs ... and to quote the manager "They all need walking ...!" These folks have had a rough go recently and need volunteer dog walkers in the worst way ... they also need someone (at this posting ...) to answer the phone a few hours a day, 4 days a week. Go say hi and meet some of the pups ... all adoptions are only made to good homes and each dog is spayed or neutered and is up to date on all shots before you can take them home. You might meet your next best friend at the Orphan Pet Oasis ... give it a visit and good luck!"

Fellow Earthlings' Wildlife Center

Just thinking about this site and the delightful little critters who "live" there makes me smile ... If you haven't ever seen a Meerkat, click on this site now and prepare to be charmed. Pam and Phil Wallberg have a Meerkat sanctuary in our very own high desert in Morongo Valley, California and while this wonderful place is not "open to the public", if you are one of its supporters, you can actually make an appointment to visit the Meerkats ... A great idea is to "give a Meerkat as a gift" ... Oh, you can't (and wouldn't really want to, according to Pam ..) take one home with you, but your $100 donation will keep the sanctuary doing its good work ...and let you visit your very own ward from time to time. The actual organization is called the Fellow Earthlings Wildlife Center and has not only been on Discovery television and written about in National Geographic, but in Disney's "The Lion King", the character and personality of "Timon", Pumba, the Warthog's best buddy, was taken directly from one of the sanctuarys' spry little Meerkats that the Disney people studied for weeks before creating the winsome and unforgettable animated version.

I don't believe there is anything more personal in the human heart than grief. I also believe that the pain we can feel about the loss of a beloved animal friend can equal, if not exceed in some cases, the grief we feel about the loss of a human companion. This site is included here to give you a place to go when talking to a friend is either just too much for you to take on or something that is not available to you. Reading about the feelings of others who feel the same way you do will support your heart in its sorrow. At this time you need reassurance that what you feel is "OK" ... what you read here will assure you of this, believe me. Please be sure to click on the button that tells you about "The Rainbow Bridge". The idea of this very special place just might give you the strength you need to come through this incredibly painful time with a little more hope. I know it does that for me ... God bless ...

My personal experience with this group has been impressive. They responded with advice several times and were very helpful when I needed to know how to take action against what I felt was an animal injustice. They do great work and encourage "grass roots" community activism. They also keep us updated on legislation that is pending while profiling animal abuse cases they are engaged in, some of which might be setting precedent that we all need to be aware of to be able to apply them in our own desert community, if need be. I am also including their Animal Cruelty Action Line email and mailing address. My prayer is that you never feel you have to use it..."
Quote from ALDF:
"When you hear about an animal abuse or neglect case in your state or community, please contact the ANIMAL CRUELTY ACTIONLINE action@aldf.org and we will provide you with detailed information on how you can help us help the animals."

"Go to this preventive medicine site and click on the "Research Controversies and Issues" link for valuable information on why so many American Medical Association Physicians believe animal experimentation to be simply "bad science" and not necessary to the well being of human beings, a popular yet erroneous belief."

"Great site to help the animal lover know what charities fund animal experimentation and which don't. See the link to The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's position on animal experimentation to understand why an impressive number of AMA Physicians are AGAINST this unnecessary but common practice."
